The harvest and cutting of coffee in the Pacific zone of Nicaragua, [occurs] in the months of October, November and December and extends until January. The lack of credit has hit the sector hard.

In the absence of financing, coffee growers in the Pacific are seeing a bad year for the harvest in the cycle that starts this month. The situation is worsened by the high costs of agrochemicals and the low workforce in Nicaragua.

“The situation is fatal. There is no workforce, paying cutters is now super difficult and the other option that is very sad is to remove the coffee and start sowing beans, among other things, which I think would be a sin for the environment, ”he said Luvy Rappaccioli, coffee producer in Diriamba.

He added that the deforestation that has occurred in neighboring farms has [caused strong wind to enter and that in the future it will make its way to the rust.]

“My concern is not only how I am going to raise this crop, because I don't have money for inputs. What is needed here is to be the voice together for all of us to talk, before the coffee culture of Carazo is lost…, I think you have to make a support organization for this area, ”said Rappaccioli, who to survive, has had to sow pitahaya, cocoa and basic grains.

“How am I keeping the farm expenses a little? - with the sowing of beans. There is no support here, but if, for example, there was a wet benefit and [all the small producers were associated,] I think we [would move forward,] ”he said.

Another who complains about the lack of support is Ruth Elizondo, coffee producer in the municipality of El Crucero. “It is a very difficult situation, on top of which the international prices have gone down, we raised the costs of the agrochemicals and that is going to affect enormously. There is no way you can maintain the level of food of the plant with the current costs and with the sale prices. Many producers what we are doing is seeing how to use this period to introduce new varieties resistant to rust," she said.

She explained that many coffee producers, due to lack of support and financing, have been forced to sow avocado and pitahaya.

“What they do is they have lots of coffee and lots of other products. The issue for us in the area of ​​El Crucero, is that some of these options, would lead to dispatch and we do not want [that], because our farms are the lung of Managua and rather we are in the search to reforest. It is a very difficult situation for producers, because you face an international crisis with adverse conditions inside the country and in terms of rust, if you do not spray, it will always attack you and that implies making four to five controls per year because [it is preventive] ”said Elizondo.

Diversifying Farms

Carlos Alberto Méndez is another coffee producer and to save production costs, his farm turned it into agroecological and diversified it. "The effort and our vision to make our production sustainable has made us move towards agroecological production, that is, to consume as little as possible currency components, chemical components, etc., what we believe is the way to make coffee sustainable."

Roads in Disrepair

“Labor is a problem in the area. The experienced cutters left and other serious difficulties we face are the roads, with the rains they were totally destroyed and in order to get out we have to look for alternate ways, ”said Méndez, coffee grower in San Marcos.

A coffee grower in the city of Masaya who requested anonymity also showed his disagreement over the lack of support. “Coffee production is critical, there is no financing from any bank. The only one who is giving us a little hand, but with technical advice, is CISA (coffee export company) and hence the inputs with the tax reforms that were made, has affected us a lot. Many of the farms here in the Pacific area are still in shape, there is no weeding, because there are no resources to update them. The picture is discouraging. ”

Due to the low rainfall and lack of nutrients in some sectors of the southern region of Nicaragua, the fruit of coffee has not fully developed.
